New Zealand’s largest lake, Lake Taupo, lies in the heart of the North Island. Some 606 sq km in area and 357 m above sea level, the lake was formed by one of the greatest volcanic explosions of all time.  The surrounding area is still volcanically active.

Today, serene Lake Taupo is proclaimed the world’s trout fishing capital and is a source of New Zealand’s longest river, the Waikato, which leaves the lake at the township, flows through the Huka Falls and the Aratiatia Rapids, and then through the heart of the northern part of North Island to the west coast just south of Auckland.

Taupo lies in the northeastern corner of Lake Taupo and has scenic views across the lake to the volcanic peaks of Tongariro National Park. With a long list of attractions in close proximity to the town and a plethora of activities.

Taupo as a ‘hub’ location is the logical holiday base for exploring the Central North Island. Comfortable day trips 1-2 hours each way link Taupo to Napier and Hawkes Bay, Rotorua and Bay of Plenty, the Waitomo Caves and the Mt Ruapehu ski fields and World Heritage Tongariro National Park.
